NETL SOS5

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory advancing America’s energy future. As the only government-owned and government-operated (GOGO) lab in the DOE complex, NETL uniquely integrates scientific research, program execution, and policy support to deliver affordable, reliable, and clean energy solutions.

From its origins in 1910 under the U.S. Bureau of Mines to its present-day leadership in energy innovation, NETL has helped drive major national advances—from improving coal mine safety and reducing acid rain, to transforming shale gas production and developing cutting-edge materials.

NETL’s mission is to develop integrated energy solutions that ensure energy security, support economic growth, and promote environmental sustainability. We deliver technology innovations that transform the energy system and support the DOE’s clean energy goals.

NETL’s workforce includes 1,800 scientists, engineers, economists, legal experts, and contractors working across three sites: Albany, Oregon; Morgantown, West Virginia; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Our labs feature advanced research facilities, including the JOULE Supercomputer, enabling breakthrough science and rapid innovation.
